Office for Nuclear Regulation contributes to Nordic conference at Sellafield

ONR took part in a joint conference organised by Sellafield Limited to exchange information with Nordic participants.

The conference was attended by elected parliamentary representatives and members of local communities from the UK, Greenland, Norway, Iceland and Sweden, as well as technical experts and safety regulators.

The conference focused on nuclear safety and environmental impacts of operations at Sellafield. The information exchange gives the Nordic participants greater confidence that operations at Sellafield are being carried out safely and effectively and that their concerns are being taken seriously.

The representatives from the Nordic communities were particularly interested in the UK nuclear regulator's opinion regarding operations on the Sellafield site and the nature of our interactions with Sellafield Ltd. Both regulator and licensee recognised that on the Sellafield site there were significant challenges and opportunities for improvement but over the last few years our interactions with SL had become more effective through advances in maturity, frankness and transparency.

The joint conference continued a programme of positive and constructive dialogue that began in 2003. It is an effective forum for exchanging information, understanding concerns, hearing different perspectives and building trust between Sellafield and Nordic states.
