ONR permissions structural repairs at AWE

30 July, 2013

ONR yesterday published their assessment report explaining their decision to allow AWE to commence repairs to structural steel work in one of their manufacturing facilities at AWE Aldermaston.

Repair of the building is part of AWE’s ongoing work to comply with the Improvement Notice issued by ONR in November last year, after a scheduled inspection by AWE in August 2012 discovered an unexpected area of corrosion on the structural steelwork. ONR investigated, and found that AWE had not fully complied with Licence Condition 28(1) in so far as its arrangements to examine, maintain and inspect the structure were not adequate to prevent its degradation, and the resulting challenge to its nuclear safety functions.
