Sellafield Ltd complies with improvement notice

26 August, 2014

Sellafield Ltd has fully complied with the Improvement Notice issued on the Sellafield Ion Exchange Effluent Plant (SIXEP) cooling tower last year. SIXEP is an effluent plant which removes radioactivity from liquid feeds from a number of plants across the Sellafield site.

ONR served the Improvement Notice because of the failure of the licensee to ensure that exposure to legionella bacteria was adequately controlled. An inspection of the tower last year revealed that the cleanliness of the tower was not acceptable. ONR required Sellafield Ltd to complete a schedule of work over six months to bring the tower up to the required standard.

Sellafield Limited provided ONR with detail of the cleaning, inspection and refurbishment work undertaken at the SIXEP cooling tower, and outlined their review of cooling tower management arrangements, satisfactorily addressing the requirements of the Notice.
