ONR has served Sellafield Ltd with an Improvement Notice to improve its arrangements for managing asbestos at the Calder Hall facility on the Sellafield site in Cumbria.
The Improvement Notice comes following an ONR inspection of Sellafield Ltd’s arrangements for managing asbestos at a number of locations on the Sellafield site. The inspection included a review of the licensee’s arrangements for identifying the location and condition of asbestos containing materials, and focused on how Sellafield Ltd manage the risk presented to prevent harm to those working in affected buildings. ONR concluded that Sellafield Ltd must improve the asbestos management arrangements on site at the Calder Hall facility.
ONR is satisfied that the issue does not have an impact on nuclear safety, and it is clear that the licensee has already taken action to initiate improvements. Sellafield Ltd are now required to make appropriate improvements to their asbestos management arrangements by 6 March 2015.
