Nuclear regulator appoints new Chief Nuclear Inspector

The Office for Nuclear Regulation, with the approval of the Secretary of State, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Richard Savage as its new Chief Nuclear Inspector (CNI) to lead ONR's regulatory activity.  This role is essential to ensuring the success of our work and our drive to be the world-class regulator that we want to be.

Richard is a Chartered Engineer with an extensive background in nuclear safety and regulation.  He served as Head of Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator, Ministry of Defence before being appointed to ONR as a Deputy Chief Nuclear Inspector in 2013. He has been Acting CNI since Dr Andy Hall's early retirement for personal reasons in November 2015.

ONR’s Chair, Nick Baldwin said:

"I’m delighted to appoint Richard to this crucial role at ONR.  His combination of personal integrity, technical and regulatory knowledge and personal leadership skills made him an excellent candidate for the highest regulatory role in ONR.  His skills and expertise will be invaluable to us in regulating a nuclear industry that is responding to new challenges and increasing demands, and ensuring effective enforcement and independent regulatory decision-making.

"This appointment is also a further step forward in establishing our top team at ONR, following the appointment of our new Chief Executive, Adriènne Kelbie, who joined in January 2016."

Richard was appointed following an open recruitment exercise.  His appointment will commence immediately and will initially be for a fixed term of three years.
