The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has granted Cumbria County Council an initial extension to implement its revised off-site emergency plan for the area around the Sellafield nuclear site.
In January 2015, ONR re-determined the Sellafield off-site emergency planning area, enlarging the area from 2 km to 6/7 km to enhance public protection in the unlikely event of a radiation emergency.
In order to fully consider all aspects of this re-determination, Cumbria County Council has requested an extension to the period required for the revision of the plan.
An extension until 1 December 2015 has been granted in accordance with ONR’s powers under regulation 9(8) of the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2001, on the basis of the detailed programme of work prepared by Cumbria County Council to complete the plan.
