UK nuclear regulator runs security briefing

Senior managers from the UK nuclear industry attended a security briefing run by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), the regulator for safety and security for UK nuclear sites.

The biannual event gives ONR’s Civil Nuclear Security programme an opportunity to reinforce the importance of an effective security culture across the UK civil nuclear industry.

Delegates, comprising both safety and security specialists, were briefed by ONR on all aspects of security including physical, cyber security and information assurance, personnel and vetting, and transport security.

The event was supported by the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure and included further briefings from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary, the Police Counter Terrorism Intelligence Unit and British Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

Staged at the national Health and Safety Laboratory in Buxton, the briefing also included a range demonstration of firepower and explosives.

Adrian Freer, Programme Director for Civil Nuclear Security at ONR said: “We are grateful again for the high level of support we receive for this event from across the nuclear industry.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility and a sound security culture is best achieved when there is the right leadership of security at senior and executive levels.

“Feedback from delegates is always extremely positive, and we hope they can all encourage continued security improvement at their respective organisations.”
