Government launches GDF consultations

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has launched two consultations relating to policy on any future Geological Disposal Facility (GDF.)

Each consultation will run in parallel for 12 weeks until 19 April 2018.

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is not directly involved in the consultations but both ONR and the Environment Agency will ultimately regulate any future GDF to ensure it meets the required high standards of safety, security and environmental protection.

The Working with Communities consultation sets out the proposed policy on how communities should be engaged and represented in a siting process for a geological disposal facility for higher activity radioactive waste in England and Northern Ireland. A consultation in Wales will start at a later date.

The second consultation, on the draft National Policy Statement (NPS), sets out the need for nationally significant infrastructure projects related to the geological disposal of higher activity radioactive waste in England.
