Office for Nuclear Regulation

Improving our engagement with the NGO community

23 July, 2018

We were delighted to welcome fifteen members of the NGO community, representing eleven different organisations to Birmingham in March, for this year’s first ONR/NGO forum.

We’ve been working with the forum to clarify how we engage, put in place co-chairing arrangements and agree priority topics for future discussion. We now have two forum meetings a year, supported by more regular, including topic-specific webinars.

Our March meeting was a constructive conversation across several nuclear safety matters, including the new domestic safeguards regime and emergency planning, and we also shared our stakeholder survey results. The latter sparked much debate about how local engagement could be improved and enhanced – especially around potential new build sites. You can find the meeting minutes on our website.

We are looking forward to our next meeting in October and are keen to increase the number of people engaging with ONR on nuclear safety and security issues, so if you represent an NGO group and would like to find out more about engaging with ONR, please get in touch via contact@onr.gov.uk.
