‘What all regulators ought to be like’, was one delegate’s verdict on ONR at the FORATOM-IAEA conference in Canada this summer.
The conference sought to help nuclear professionals adapt to change in the sector by improving leadership and management.
The comment followed the plenary address from our Chief Executive, Adriènne Kelbie, which talked about our enabling regulation approach and highlighted the benefits of co-operation and the importance of openness and teamwork across boundaries.
Drawing on examples from the aviation industry, where fear of challenging upwards has led to the loss of hundreds of lives, she highlighted the necessity – and challenge – of creating a culture where everyone welcomes diverse perspectives.
Adriènne commented, “It was a privilege to share ONR’s experiences and hear those of our international colleagues. It brought home to me that so many of us are facing similar challenges, despite our different circumstances – and it also highlighted how much progress we’ve made since ONR vested in 2014.”
