In January we held an ‘informative and reassuring’ event with operators and smallholders, who we’ve been working closely with on establishing a domestic safeguards regime, in preparation for the UK exiting Euratom.
At the event we introduced our draft ONR inspector guidance on nuclear material accountancy and control, and ONR regulatory expectations for Accountancy and Control Plans – which we’ll publish soon on our website for comment.
We’ve recruited sufficient safeguards specialists, and enough warranted safeguards inspectors to meet international obligations from 29 March 2019 if there is a no-deal Brexit. We’ll then work towards delivering a domestic safeguards regime equivalent in effectiveness and coverage to that currently provided by Euratom, by January 2021.
