Over 70 stakeholders involved in the transport of radioactive material attended a conference organised by ONR’s Transport Competent Authority (TCA) team.
The event provided a good opportunity for the TCA team to share their expectations on compliance with regulations governing the transport of radioactive material.
There was a useful Q&A session which provided instant feedback to ONR on the topics discussed and highlighted where further guidance may be required and identified opportunities for collaborative working.
The event held in Bootle brought together both regulators, dutyholders and government departments including EDF, Sellafield Ltd, Urenco, Magnox Ltd, Westinghouse, DNSR, HSE SEPA and BEIS, providing them with a really good networking and information sharing opportunity.
Gavin Smith, Delivery Lead for TCA, also took the opportunity to brief stakeholders with the highlights of the draft ONR Strategy 2025 which was well received by stakeholders.
Gavin, said: “The key aim for TCA is to make sure we continue to efficiently and effectively carry out our responsibilities for the regulation of the transport of radioactive material in Great Britain ensuring public protection.
“This event provided an opportunity to support the sector to improve compliance with regulations by taking an enabling approach and working collaboratively with the industry we regulate, other regulators and government departments.
“Thanks to everybody in TCA team who helped support this event ensuring it was such a huge success.”
TCA is the GB Competent Authority for the civil transport of radioactive material by road, rail and inland waterways, and carry out a range of regulatory activities to assure the safe transport of radioactive material across the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors.
ONR regulate the transport of radioactive material under both The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 and The Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017.
