Morgan Sindall complies with improvement notice

We can confirm that Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Ltd has now complied with an improvement notice served on 25 January 2021.

The notice was served after workers came close to striking a live high voltage electric cable during excavation work at the Sellafield site. Nobody was harmed in the incident on 7 October 2020, and there was no impact on the public or the environment.

Enquiries by our inspectors subsequently established that there were shortfalls by the contractor in providing relevant information to workers undertaking the excavation work, adherence to procedures and in supervision.

Superintending Inspector Kulvinder McDonald said: “This incident posed a serious risk to workers who came within close proximity of an 11kV electrical cable.

“As a regulator we will have no hesitation in taking action to bring about improvements when shortfalls are identified.

“Since this incident occurred, I have been pleased with the action taken by Morgan Sindall to put in place measures to prevent any similar occurrences in the future, and I am satisfied that they have complied fully with the requirements of the improvement notice.”
