  • Date: June 2022

Executive summary

Purpose of Intervention

This was a planned inspection of EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd.’s (NGL’s) Sizewell B (SZB) power station, undertaken as part of the planned intervention strategy for the Operating Facilities Division (OFD) of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), and carried out in accordance with the Integrated Intervention Strategy (IIS) for the site.

Interventions Carried Out by ONR

I carried out an inspection of compliance with licence condition (LC) 7 (incidents on the site). The focus of the intervention was the licensee’s investigation of events that had previously been reported to ONR.

The intervention was performed in line with ONR’s guidance requirements (as described in our technical inspection guides) in the areas inspected.

Key Findings, Inspector’s Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

I confirmed by reading investigation reports for the reported events, and interviewing the report authors, that:

  • Appropriate direct and root causes are identified along with contributory factors.
  • Where human error is identified as a cause, the factors leading to the human error are appropriately considered.
  • The results of the investigations are used to develop corrective actions, to be implemented in a timely fashion to avoid any recurrence of the incidents.

The results of investigations are used to develop corrective actions that are implemented in due time to avoid any recurrence of the incidents.

Conclusion of Intervention

There were no findings from this inspection that could significantly undermine nuclear safety or that required additional regulatory action over and above the planned interventions at Sizewell B, as set out in the IIS.
