Senior Managers’ Nuclear Security Briefing brings industry leaders together

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has held its latest security briefing event for senior managers from across the UK civil nuclear industry.

The biannual gathering brings together leaders and their associates to discuss the most important news and developments within the security sector.

Delegates and participants at the event, from 23-25 May, included specialists from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) and the Cybersecurity Information Assurance (CSINA), with ONR inspectors also among the speakers.

Participants were briefed on all aspects of civil nuclear security, including protective security, cyber security and information assurance, personnel security, nuclear safeguards, and transport security matters.

Presentations from the CSINA and the CNC aimed to upskill and instruct attendees, and Lee Garner, the ONR transport inspector who led the event, said: “The security briefing event is a great way for senior management and dutyholders to enhance their knowledge.

“ONR’s Civil Nuclear Security and Safeguards Division (CNSS) provide these sessions to new managers coming into the nuclear sector to keep them up-to-speed on current security practices, regulations, and to provide an overall picture of areas including police, counter-terrorism, and bomb disposal unit involvement.”

Through the CNSS Division, ONR regulates the security of:

  • Nuclear and other radioactive materials on civil licensed nuclear sites.
  • Nuclear materials off licensed sites.
  • Domestic transport of nuclear materials by road, rail and sea; and
  • International transport of nuclear and other radioactive materials by UK flagged vessels.
  • Sensitive nuclear information wherever it is held.

ONR operates as a world-leading and industry enabling regulator across its main divisional areas of interest.

The next senior managers' briefing is already in planning and is scheduled for later this year.
